Bean aka Bella Bean – Special Needs

Bean is a sweet older chihuahua born (2014). Sadly she was injured 5 years ago and no longer can walk.

HER NEEDS:

~ Cannot walk (back end doesn’t work) so she needs Wheels to get around or help from you to carry her

~ Wears Diapers so needs multiple changes every day as well 1 and sometimes twice a night.

~ You need help express her bladder when you do a diaper change (super easy just push on her lower tummy)- She can poop and pee on her own though.

~ Unfortunately the diapers don’t hold everything in well so stuff does drip or fall out so you do have to always have something under her and lots of washing of blankets and beds.

~ She needs someone who isn’t a super sound sleeper. She needs to be checked a few times a night if she needs her bed changed (I let her have the night time with her diaper off so put her in her bed with Pee Pads) Which you need to change over night. As well offer her water.

~ Needs someone who doesn’t go out much or can take her with you (weather permitting)

HER LOVES:

~ She loves people ! Always wants to be with someone. She would love a home where she can see lots of people. Either go to work with her person, or someone who putters around outside a lot so she gets more stimulation than just stuck in a house all day/night.

~ Loves to go for short walks and then a push around in her buggy

~ Loves car rides and enjoys going where ever you go.

HER DISLIKES:

~ She does not like to be left alone. She will bark and cry the entire time you go out if you leave her at home.

~ She can be cranky with new dogs but has lived with them in the past.

More about her:

Bean was injured 5 years ago (when she was 5) and can no longer walk.   Her back legs move but they can’t hold her up.  She has wheels to get around and she does well with them.   She can go to the bathroom on her own but she does require diapers as she can’t control it.   I do also express her bladder every time I change her diaper to just be sure she is getting it all out.   It is easy you just push on her lower belly ..  She does poop on her own.

She did have colitis years ago and she came to me with a bad urinary infection so she does need to be monitored and watch what she eats.  She needs a low fat food for the colitis and as less stress as possible .   The vet has now recommended urinary CD food for her ongoing to help with her urinary issues.   Dogs with this back end issue is prone to infections so the cd food will prevent that from happening. As well you do have to change her diaper often and make sure she is “dry” as that causes urinary issues.

She is a bit more work then a regular dog.  She does need her diaper changed through out the day .  There is also that expense as well ..  she goes through about 4-5 a day ..  She is a sweet thing and pretty good .. she doesn’t bark or fuss much and will just lay in her little bed most of the day but would also love to cuddle with you on the couch ..  you just have to always watch her and put her on the flood if you get up so she doesn’t fall off the couch.    She will tell you if she wants something or to do a run around .. she will drag herself off the bed and she can get around pretty good that way also if you have slippery floors.

I put her in her wheels through out the day so she can do a bit of a run around .. that also helps her “poo”  ..  she does like to go for walks but can only do about 15-20 min.  and it has to be a fairly flat surface .  but she can motor pretty good and over some things !      I wouldn’t recommend her off leash at all ..  she can’t get too far away from you or very fast but mostly because she is small and fragile and it is safer to have her close to you just in case another dog or predator comes for her .. You need to carry her around a bit of course also if you are going out .. she loves care rides and is really good..
