My cats are Killi, an all-white shorthair and Guchi, a grey tabby. Both are spayed and microchipped and receive regular health check-ups at the Duncan Cat Clinic.All shots are up to date. They are about 7 – 8 years old.

The picture of the two cats together on the bed shows how beautiful Guchi’s markings are.  She has the prettiest markings of any tabby I have ever seen.  And I guess this picture proves me wrong, they really are closely bonded in their friendship.  I think they would get over being separated but I’m sure their choice would be to continue living together.

Regarding the cats’ health, Killi has never had an injury or illness.  Guchi had pancreatitis and was treated at the Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital in January 2021.  There hasn’t been any recurrence.

My impression is that they will do well as a pair or as individuals.
Both cats have lived in an inside/outside environment for just about their entire lives and I think that is where they would do best.  However, I think Killi would be most adaptable to being confined inside as long as there were large windows to watch outside.and to have people around for company.  Both cats are happy being left outside on their own but I don’t think Guchi would do well in a situation where she was left alone inside while the owner went to work, for example.  A retired owner like me would probably be best or someone who works from home.

I would say they tolerate having other cats around.  I have outside security cameras and I often see them on video together without signs of conflict.  One of the visiting cats is a large Maine-Coon who comes in through the cat door at night to steal food.  My cats try to mount a defence but if the cat gets into the house, they seem to tolerate each other.  I have observed my cats outside with other cats and their interactions do not appear to be negative or positive.  My daughter brought her cat to stay at my house for a few months and they quickly evolved to a peaceful 3-some.

My cats are wary of dogs.  I have several friends who bring their dogs when they visit me.  My cats go outside and observe the dogs through the patio door.  If the dogs are let out into the back yard, the cats go into the forest and wait for the dogs to leave.  I have had cats and dogs together before and in each case they have developed good relationships but it does take time.  I haven’t seen any warning signs to suggest huge risks here.  Guchi did suffered quite serious injuries a log time ago in a dog attack so that may hinder relationships with other dogs.

They love my grandkids.  However, that is a pretty small sample on which to base an opinion.  My feeling is that either cat could become friends with any child after an introductory period.  

Are they cuddle-cats?  I would say a qualified yes, depending on how cuddle is defined.  Both love to have a tummy-rub, but on the ground rather than on a lap.  This occurs at almost every encounter we have during the day.  At night in bed, their interactions with me are more what I would define as a cuddle.  Guchi has trained me to lie on my back so she can climb up on my legs and settle in.  Once there, she loves to be stroked and petted.  Killi prefers to lie on the bed with her body snuggled up against mine while I stroke her.  I would call all of this “free-style” cuddling.and I am sure going to miss it.

They are both cautious when meeting new people. I don’t see this as a problem because they work their way through it after just a few meetings.  Better to be safe than sorry!  Unfortunately, my son who is big and boisterous hasn’t yet been able to qualify to their performance standards.

Do they want human contact?  Yes, but only if they have been properly introduced.   Once a person has been accepted into their “inner circles” that seems to be a lifelong bond.  It just takes time!

Neither cat will eat any food that contains shrimp, including a fresh shrimp as a treat.  Weird but for real!   

Both cats are on a broad-spectrum flea and other pest medication.  They had been on Bravecto but when Guchi developed a painful skin rash from that  their vet recommended switching both to Nexgard Combo to get the broader pest coverage.  That meant going to monthly applications instead of every 3 months (monthly average cost is almost the same).  Guchi no longer has the skin irritation but still tries to avoid her monthly dose with a game of “catch me if you can”.  However, if an old arthritic man like me can succeed, anyone can.  Killi offers no resistance at all to her monthly dose which I can usually apply while she is resting on the back of the couch.

I have not been able to get either cat into a harness.  That isn’t much of a problem in my low-traffic neighborhood, and they get off the road when they hear a car approaching.  They would do best in a quiet area and low traffic neighbourhood. They will also need to be kept in for a min. of 4 weeks at the new home so they know where their new home is and they are more settled.
